Security

How you use WebAssign can affect the security of personal information stored in WebAssign. We recommend the following security measures to prevent your personal information from being accessed against your will.

Public Computers

If you are using a shared or public computer, remember to log out when you are finished with WebAssign. Exit the browser completely to prevent others from using your account.

Depending on how the shared computer is set up, some information about your use of WebAssign might be retained. If this is a concern, clear the browser’s cache (temporary internet files), history, and location bar list.

Password

Initially, the instructor or school sets the password to access WebAssign, but you should change your password before starting to use WebAssign to prevent unauthorized access to your assignments. Contact WebAssign or your instructor/school to reset your password in case you have forgotten it.

Cookies

A cookie is a data file that a website writes and sends to your computer when you visit the site. WebAssign uses a cookie as a convenience to you. You do not need to accept them. If your browser is set to disable cookies, you might have to log back in to WebAssign when you return from another website.

Our cookie file contains an encrypted version of your username and school. This information is used to identify who you are when you make a request to WebAssign. If you allow your browser to accept WebAssign cookies, a cookie is set and trusted when you return to WebAssign after visiting an external site. After you log out of WebAssign, the cookie is deleted.

SSL connection

WebAssign uses SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) technology for transmitting private login information over the Internet. SSL works by encrypting data that is transmitted over the SSL connection. Both Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer support SSL. When you sign in to WebAssign, your username, institution, and password are encrypted and then sent over the Internet using an SSL connection. No one can read or access the data that is being transmitted.

After you sign in and leave the encrypted connection, WebAssign keeps track of who you are by using a computer-generated key. The key contains an encrypted version of your username and school.
